Jonathan Rand wrote his first play Hard Candy in 1997 during his junior year at the public high school Stanton College Preparatory School in Jacksonville, Florida. In the annual national survey conducted by the Educational Theatre Association, Hard Candy was declared among the top six most-produced short plays in high schools for eleven straight seasons, from 1998-1999 to 2008-2009.
During his sophomore year at the University of Pennsylvania, Mr. Rand co-founded Playscripts, Inc., a publisher of new plays. He graduated in 2002 with a Bachelor's Degree in Theatre Arts.
In the 2008-2009 season, five of the top ten plays on the national survey were penned by Mr. Rand: The Least Offensive Play in the Whole Darn World was the 10th most produced; Check Please: Take 3 and Hard Candy tied for 6th; Check Please: Take 2 ranked 3rd; and Check Please topped the list as the #1 most-produced short play for the fifth consecutive season. All told, his plays have been produced by over 4,300 theaters in all 50 states and in 35 countries.
Mr. Rand's ten-minute satire Drugs Are Bad was selected by the Actors Theatre of Louisville as a Heideman Award finalist in the 2003 National Ten-Minute Play Contest. His work is featured in The Best Stage Scenes 2004, The Best Men's Stage Monologues 2005, The Best Women's Stage Monologues 2006, The Best Stage Scenes 2007, 2009: The Best Men's Stage Monologues (Smith & Kraus), Dramatics magazine, Actor's Choice: Monologues for Teens, (Playscripts, Inc.), and Laugh Lines: Short Comic Plays (Random House). Other published plays include Law & Order: Fairy Tale Unit, Romeo To Go, Check Please: Take 3, The People vs. Spam, The Least Offensive Play in the Whole Darn World, and Murder in the Knife Room. He lives in New York City.
